The time-traveller went forward a day, robbed some suit outside the bank, and then returned to the present to pocket the money before the crime was committed! Unfortunately, en-route to deposit the money he himself was mugged! The police never caught the assailant; it was as if he simply disappeared.
I like these time travel loop stories, or bootstrap paradoxes as they’re sometimes called. Could they be described as recursion loops? If you’re also a fan, look up some of Robert A. Heinlein’s short stories (I seem to remember ‘By his bootstraps’ being a good example). Another saga coming today hopefully, seeing as I missed one yesterday.
